Nothing makes my librarian heart go all thumpity quite like a brand spanking new picture book that’s just begging to be read aloud. If the book can make my students laugh, that’s a plus. If it’s silly and sentimental and seriously-what-will-happen-next all at the same time? EVEN BETTER. It’s been forever since we’ve done a giveaway around these parts so when Disney-Hyperion sent me this little gem by Mac Barnett and offered a prize pack for one winner from my site I was like, “Heck-to-the-YES.”
So– have you ever read a book by Mac Barnett?
If your answer is “yes” then high five. If your answer is “no” then get thee to the library because this guy knows how to write a children’s book.
Barnett’s work strikes a lovely balance between reality and nonsense while leaving room for a dash of surprise that keeps my students craving a second helping. His books are some of my favorites to read aloud in the school library because there’s so much for my students and I to talk about as we dive into each story.
If you’re looking for a good first read, I suggest Extra Yarn (I recommended it in a picture book round up a few years back!). This is a great example of Barnett’s knack for deadpan humor and it’s got such a satisfying ending that you’ll want to go back to the beginning just to get to the end a second time. After that try Oh No!: Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World (woot for girl scientists!) and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole (because it’s short, sweet, and brilliant).
I just got my hands on his new book Rules of the House and it did not disappoint. It tells the story of Ian (an avid rule follower) and what happens when his sister (a confirmed rule breaker) get into a rule-related pickle. There’s suspense. There are monsters. There’s humor and tooth-brushing. There’s sibling loathing turned to eventual sibling love. Basically it’s the whole package. I read it with my kiddos but I definitely think it’s geared for older little people. I’d recommend this to kids in the Kindergarten to 3rd grade range.
Now for the fun part! Disney-Hyperion is giving away a copy of Rules of the House AND a prize pack that includes a kid’s backpack from LL Bean and a branded toothbrush (the toothbrush is for sure the secondary hero of this story). Enter the raffle below for a chance to win and I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you!
