About

M.E. // Hi folks! I'm Mary Evelyn-- school librarian, old-fashioned cocktail drinker, song maker-upper, blogger, wife, mama, Orthodox Christian.  This is far from my childhood dream of becoming a clown/ballerina, which sounds scary but would probably have been pretty great for unisex birthday parties.  I love my handsome husband, my spunky toddler, and my little space here in Columbus, Ohio.  Also, Arrested Development.  I love that too.

In 2012 I found out that I was expecting a baby boy.  I also learned that he would be born with a birth defect called Spina Bifida-- a neural tube defect in which the spinal column does not close completely.  Since then I'm just learning-- what it means to be a mother, what it means to live with disability, and how being honest and vulnerable opens us up to so much good.

The Boys // Greg in five words: hunky, patient, athletic, kind, pun-maker.  Simeon in five words: munchable, crazy-hair, smiley, patient, affectionate.

The Blog // I started this blog back in 2012. I write about living our new normal-- the good, the bad, and the laughable.  I want this to be a place where I can share honestly. We laugh a lot around here.  I like to think all matters are laughing matters, if you want them to be.

I chose the name What Do You Do, Dear? based on a book by Sesyle Joslin.  It's all about staying poised in ridiculous and stressful situations (like when a cowboy tries to kidnap you from the library!  Egads!).  Also, it's illustrated by Maurice Sendak who is kind of a genius.

So, if you're a mom living an adventurous "new normal," come on in-- I'm with ya.

If you're a mom living an adventurous "typical," you're welcome too (we have more in common than you think).
