I listen to a lot of podcasts. Like, maybe I’m a bit of a podcast snob (which ranks as the nerdiest kind of snob right below “calculator” and “allergy-medication”). Seriously, I love them. If you had told me when I was 15-years-old that someday I’d be cruising around in a minivan, snacking on goldfish crackers, completely enraptured by the calming tones of an Ira Glass interview, I’d have thrown a fist full of butterfly clips in your face before cranking up some dope Smash Mouth on my portable CD player and politely suggesting you talk to the hand. And yet, here we are.
I got older and old people like listening to other old people talk.
So when I heard from Sarah Evans, creator and producer of the Bringing Up Betty podcast, I had no idea what her show was about but I loved the idea of giving it a listen and considering an interview. I was cooking dinner and checking emails at the time (aka: burning food) so I clicked her link and figured I’d check out a few minutes of the most recent episode to see if it was a good fit.
My husband found me 25 minutes later, leaking gumdrop-sized tears into the spaghetti sauce. I was officially a fan.
Sarah and I spoke way back in September and I’ve been anxious to hear how the episode turned out. It’s strange to talk with someone about your hard things– especially when your hard things are also your good things and your favorite things and your love things. For me, choosing the just right words is easier when those words come through my keyboard and not through my lips. I wanted to be honest about my experiences while conveying the very deep affection and respect I have for my son. In the end, speaking with Sarah was a ton of fun and she did a wonderful job editing the interview. I’d love for you to give it a listen (I mean c’mon– you’re dying to know what my voice sounds like, right?).
Check out her other episodes while you’re at it! Especially these because they’re my favorites:
On a completely separate note, I haven’t posted in a month which is like whoa— a big step back for me. I love writing but I love reading too and I’ve been doing a ton of that lately (hopefully I can share some good books with you soon?).
How the heck have you guys been???
